When a couple first gets married they need to plan their estate. They should first visit the human resource department and change their spouse to the beneficiary on their life insurance forms. if the couple plans of having children they may need to up the benefit amount of their life insurance policy.
Now is also a time to draft a will. This will leave the investments and assets to the spouse. If there is no will in place the spouse may not be able to get anything in court. Terms of the prenuptial agreement should also be in the will. This will ensure a person’s wishes are carried out.
In order to make sure the spouse has legal rights in case of an emergency a power of attorney form should be written up. This will make sure all legal and medical decisions are made properly. If both spouses are in an accident the couple should write in someone they trust to make decisions for them.
If a person was a homeowner before they were married they need to address terms of ownership. The deed may need to be changed to include both names. This will allow the spouse to keep the home in case of an emergency.
